Facciamo Rumore

A book that simply explains deafness to both deaf people and those who do not want to hear. The subtitle is of course ironic, but basically it is toward that we often lock ourselves in our silences-regardless of whether we are deaf people or not-and never want to come out again. Many deaf people hide and live in the shadows, in a forced silence. Hence the title’s invitation to come out of the shadows to make noise.

In the horizon of inclusion that has been configured in recent years-which seems to be the cradle of a future in which diversity will finally be fully converted to uniqueness-deafness has always been somewhat muted, but Chiara Bucello and Ludovica Billi have managed to bring the issue out of silence by bringing it to mainstream topics on Instagram and TikTok with their project The Deaf Soul.

Among others, Ludovica and Chiara have been Diversity Media Awards 2024 finalists, are models for I’MPERFETTA project (Carlotta Giancane’s genius project), TEDx speakers and at dozens of events. From the authors’ experiences narrated in the book, we can learn what difficulties can be encountered when living with deafness, what it means to wear a cochlear implant for the first time, what it means to travel or wake up or drive a car or live with other deaf people.

The biographical narration that emerges of the two authors are true microphone passages, and we have chosen to let the voices-and yes because deaf people are not dumb! – of the authors by including icons designed by Ariele Pirona of RebelHands.

This book is a cry for STOP, it is a call to accept all our small and messy diversities as nuances of a grand design, a chance to open our minds toward conditions that are labeled “strange” and are instead very powerful, like Ludovica Billi and Chiara Bucello’s project.
