Pages: 304

The novel recounts three moments in the life of Leo, a writer in his early thirties, grappling with the enormous pain of losing his partner, Thomas, a young German musician. Their relationship is recounted through long reflections and continuous flashbacks. Leo is a successful writer who lives between Milan, Paris, London and Florence, while Thomas lives in West Berlin. The two lovers often meet around Europe and spend their holidays together, but they live in two separate rooms, two thousand kilometres apart. This allows them to see each other whenever they want, but also to retreat into their own solitude. Until Thomas begins a relationship with a girl. This strange three-way relationship triggers real bouts of jealousy in Leo, but it soon ends due to Thomas’ incurable illness. Thomas, just over twenty-five years old, dies in a hospital in Munich.

About the author...

Pier Vittorio Tondelli (Correggio, 1955 – 1991) was one of the most influential Italian writers of the late 20th century, a symbolic voice of a restless, nomadic and queer generation. He made his debut in 1980 with Altri libertini (Other Libertines), a cult novel that recounts the suburbs, nights, desires and marginality of youth in raw and poetic language. His best-known works include Pao Pao, Rimini and, above all, Camere separate (1989), a story of love and mourning between two men that marked a turning point in the representation of homosexuality in Italy. As curator of the Under 25 project, Tondelli discovered and supported numerous young authors, opening up space for new forms of writing. His literary legacy is now recognised as central to the formation of an Italian LGBTQ+ canon and to a form of fiction capable of recounting fragility, bodies and desires without mediation.
