“It hasn’t been easy. In these words I have always hidden a world of events, thoughts and fears that have made my sports career very different from what one might imagine. I have never spoken about it both to avoid overshadowing what we are doing as a nation and as a movement in artistic swimming, and for reasons of opportunity. Everything I have done, from the first day of training onwards, has been chasing a dream, without ever questioning it. The truth is that it happens that you get lost halfway, you lose your way, you no longer remember where you started and where you wanted to go. We grow up with the belief that ‘if you apply yourself you can do it’, and by blindly chasing this belief we transform work into obligation, challenges into exams, satisfactions into numbers. So winning becomes just prevailing over others, ignoring how the outcome of any competition is in the hands of luck. And above all losing its meaning. Faced with the fear of being at the mercy of fate, what can we do to hold on to the joy of nurturing our ambitions? It wasn’t easy, but retracing my steps, digging into my memories in search of the finish line for which I had set out, allowed me to rediscover the very meaning of the journey, and the joy of competition: the gifting of the satisfaction of running together among all the participants in the race. I hope that my experience can be of help to someone who has lost it, to find their way again. Or even better, to not get lost.» Giorgio Minisini:
