Italian Narrative
A story suspended between coexisting worlds. At the centre is the life of the young protagonist, an eclectic and restless teenager, struggling with an unrequited love for Barbara, a mysterious and elusive creature. But if love flays, friendship often saves. Her encounter with Nicola, a boy pursuing the illusion of becoming a woman, with a melancholic and uncertain audacity, offers her a place to stay, where she can feel free to create another world. And share ideals. It is not easy to grow up when one feels different from others, when one’s own nature imposes itself, tragic and magnificent at the same time. The protagonist’s narrative voice, imbued with a calm resignation, rises above the uncertainty of her own life, and tells us about her tormented relationship with her family, except for her two grandmothers, ironic and visionary creatures who dream of communist victory through love and devotion to Berlinguer. And the political commitment in the radical party, the struggles to change Italy through non-conformism and non-violence, with the mad urge to transform diversity into beauty. Around her a Naples suspended between tradition and innovation, a place to move or hide. The years from 1975 to 1980 are crossed running, in an attempt to grow, to shape life. And again the trap of the armed struggle, the feminist battles, the birth of the first lesbian groups, to be given a semantic and functional prominence, to be just what one is. Nicola’s restlessness predominates over everything, her desperate attempt to shift her anguish onto happiness through a behavioural language that becomes a message, in a final, decisive, self-affirmation, a consequential conclusion to events.
