She was a British novelist, essayist and literary critic, one of the most important figures of modernist literature of the 20th century. She is known for her innovative narrative style, in particular the use of stream of consciousness, and for her reflections on the condition of women. Among her most famous works are Mrs Dalloway , To the Lighthouse and A Room of One’s Own , a fundamental essay in feminist thought. She was also a founder of the Bloomsbury Group, an intellectual and artistic circle in London. Her life was marked by periods of mental suffering and she took her own life in 1941.
