Genre fiction
At sixteen, Livio leaves home without shoes and runs away. He can no longer bear the constraints of his family and wants to go to Florence to listen to Patti Smith. He is not a leader, but rather a middleman. He is an enthusiastic boy, perhaps a little clumsy: he always repeats “Livio from Cagliari” to anyone who asks him who he is. At the concert, he meets Anaïs, who is open-minded and magnetic, and falls madly in love with her. She introduces him to drugs, to fun beyond all limits, to sexual freedom, dragging him into a new era of his existence, from punk to house music, from gay clubs to crowded rainbow discos. With Anaïs, Livio also begins to frequent the home of Cesare, a kind man who welcomes the “unworthy” under his roof: bohemian artists and young people who do not surrender to the lifestyles imposed by society. Anaïs, however, runs too fast, and Livio loses her immediately, finds her again, and loses her a thousand more times. For a decade, he tries to reach her without ever really succeeding, stubbornly searching for her in the body of everyone he meets. He finds her again in Paris, London, then back in Cagliari, but she is increasingly lost in a whirlwind of sex and drugs, bad relationships, and missteps. Until an unexpected and moving epilogue.
Accept it, we are unworthy. But you are young. You still have time, if you want it. Disguise yourselves. Cheat. Wear a cloak that protects you and does not reveal you, hide among people, lie to them, lie to yourselves. No exceptions. But beware: I am not sure that this will save you from unhappiness.
